Adrian Lopez, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene.

AUSTIN, Texas — Police have identified a man killed at an apartment complex on South Pleasant Valley Road in southeast Austin Monday afternoon.

The Austin Police Department (APD) said officers responded to a call of a shooting just after 2 p.m. at the Waterloo Flats complex. The caller, who was an employee of the complex, told dispatch that someone had run up to him and begun attacking him.

When officers arrived, they found a man in his 40s with an apparent gunshot wound, later identified as 39-year-old Adrian Lopez. Despite life-saving measures, Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Through processing the scene and interviewing witnesses, investigators determined that Lopez had randomly begun assaulting the complex employee and threatened him with pepper spray, leading the employee to shoot Lopez.

It remains unclear if the suspect or victim knew each other, but APD said no charges are being filed at this time. The case remains under investigation.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact police at 512-974-TIPS. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to Capital Area Crime Stoppers online or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward up to $1,000 may be available for any information that leads to an arrest.
