(CNN) – Two deaths from West Nile virus have been reported in Wisconsin and another in Illinois – the first deaths from the virus in those states this year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it’s received reports of 18 deaths from West Nile across the country so far this year.

There were 182 deaths from the virus in 2023.

While this year’s numbers are lower compared to this time period last year, that could change after a follow-up review of preliminary data.

In addition to the two deaths in Wisconsin, another person was hospitalized with West Nile.

Alongside the Illinois death, another nine West Nile cases have been reported in that state this year.

The virus is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

There’s no vaccine or specific treatment.

Most West Nile cases are mild, often showing as flu-like symptoms and a rash.

Experts say reducing exposure to mosquitoes is the best way to avoid infection. Use insect repellant when going outdoors and wear long pants and long sleeves.
