Pavel Durov, cofounder of the messaging and social media platform Telegram, was arrested in France and charged with enabling crimes like distribution of child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking and fraud. The Russian, who also has French citizenship, stands accused of facilitating these crimes on Telegram and faces up to 10 years in prison. The arrest has drawn commendation and consternation, but is more complex than it looks at first glance.
