DUBLIN, Va. (WDBJ) – You might think it takes a village to keep the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery beautiful, but it’s actually just a few people. Thursday, the state recognized their dedication to honoring our heroes.

State officials, veterans and the eight people who take care of the beloved site gathered for the ceremony to receive the National Cemetery Administration’s 2024 Award for Operational Excellence. It’s based on an assessment made every three years by the Veterans Association.

“When they did that here in Southwestern Virginia, here in Dublin, not only did they pass, but they got an elite score,” said Commissioner of Virginia’s Department of Veteran Services Chuck Zingler. “A score of operational excellence.”

The award was presented by James Earp, the Director of Veterans Cemetery Grants Program at the NCA.

The NCA gives the award to caretakers who go above and beyond taking care of cemetery grounds. Earp said its real purpose is to thank the staff members for their work maintaining where veterans are laid to rest and their families to appreciate.

“When they leave, whether it’s administrative or the operations out on the grounds, they’re leaving something very special for the families to come visit every single day.” said Earp.

It’s a job that keeps staff on the grounds 365 days a year.

“It’s a daily commitment from the staff, perseverance through weather, whatever nature throws at us, recognizing our veteran families and making sure that they receive the benefits that they’ve earned,” said Cemetery Superintendent Travis Graham.

Graham said he and the staff are honored to be awarded for their hard work.

“I could see from the expressions of my staff that they really felt appreciated today and it’s been a great day for them,” he said. “Hopefully they can cherish this day going forward.”

The award is a reminder to continue bringing that “operational excellence” to the community every day.

“It’s not just about getting an award for the staff here. They all care and they come in with a commitment and a good attitude every day to towards serving our veterans,” said Graham.
