HENRICO, Va. (WWBT/Gray News) – A little girl in Virginia is dead after she was hit by a car in a Henrico-area neighborhood.

Henrico police said they were called to the crash scene at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday where officers found a 2-year-old girl “with obvious signs of trauma.”

The girl was taken to the hospital, but she later died.

According to police, the toddler had wandered away from her home and into the eastbound lanes of Staples Mill Road where a Honda hit her.

Police said the driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.

Henrico’s Special Victim’s Unit is working to figure out how the toddler left the home.

Investigators say the child was being cared for by a babysitter that evening.

The child’s death remains under investigation.
