NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Detectives arrested a man for allegedly breaking into an apartment and opening fire in the Cayce Homes neighborhood in July.

According to the arrest affidavit, in the early morning hours of July 25, 27-year-old James Allen Briggs, with the help of two other men, broke into an apartment on Sylvan Street. He gained access by breaking the window A/C unit loose and pushing it through so he could climb in the window, the affidavit states.

While Briggs was shaking the window unit, a male was inside, lying in bed, and he went to the window to see what was happening, according to the officer’s report. Briggs pointed his gun through the window and began shooting, forcing the man inside to hide in the corner of the room to avoid getting shot, the report states.

The man told officers that Briggs then entered through the window and fired multiple rounds into the mattress. He said he began yelling at Briggs that he had the wrong apartment, and his four grandchildren were in the other room, police said.

Briggs reportedly went into the living room where the grandchildren were located and was heard saying, “There’s kids in here.” He then went back to the window and exited the way he came in while muttering, “Wrong house, wrong house.”

According to the affidavit, two women were in the home when the break-in occurred. Officers spoke with one woman who was on the couch and another who hid in the bathroom during the incident.

No one was injured during the shooting.

Surveillance footage shows Briggs and two other men left together from a unit on South 5th Street before heading to the victim’s apartment on Sylvan Street.

Briggs was identified in the footage and arrested on Wednesday, August 28, and booked on nine charges, including reckless endangerment, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated burglary, and employing a firearm with intent to kill. He remains in custody on a $195,000 bond.
