MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF/Gray News) – A South Carolina man is facing a murder charge after investigators found a missing woman’s remains buried under a backyard firepit.

Sheridan Fogle, 54, was arrested this week in the missing person case that has now turned into a homicide investigation.

Fogle has been charged with murder in connection to the death of 51-year-old Penni Whiteside.

Myrtle Beach police said the case against Fogle dates back to May 11, 2022, when Whiteside was living with him.

Police said that during their investigation, statements from witnesses revealed that Whiteside may have been buried near the home in the backyard under a firepit.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the property on June 12, and during the search, Whiteside’s remains were recovered and later identified.

A judge denied bond for Fogle on Friday based on the severity of the murder charge.

Neighbors shared that they were shocked by the news of Fogle’s arrest.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office did not immediately release Whiteside’s cause of death as the investigation continues.
