Murray Aiken netted his first professional goal to earn Airdrieonians a dramatic draw and revealed it was made all the more special by being able to do it in front of his family.

The 20-year-old is on loan from Premiership side Hibernian for a second time, having also joined the Diamonds last term before an ankle injury scuppered his spell in Monklands the first time around.

But he had a moment he will forever remember on Saturday when he popped up in the 87th minute to fire home at the second attempt inside the box and complete Airdrie’s comeback from 2-0 down at Hamilton Accies.

It sent the travelling fans behind the goal wild – and midfielder Murray was able to salute his family in the stands after his special strike.

He said: “I should have had a few last season but that is my first professional goal. It is good to get that one out the way and hopefully there’s more to come.

“It was a good feeling, especially down that end. My brother and my mum and dad were in the stand so it was good to score in front of them and see them smiling.

“Once you settle down a bit, there is still a wee bit of disappointment about the result and you are brought back to earth a wee bit.

“I had the first effort and when I saw it come back out, I was just like ‘I am getting on the end of this’ and I just hit it into the back of the net, so it was good.”

Airdrie were hailed by their manager Rhys McCabe for the character they showed to net twice in the space of seven minutes late on, with Aaron Reid also on target.

But Aiken, whose side had lost three on the bounce, felt his side could have taken all three in the end.

He added: “There’s two ways you can look at it. Come the 80th minute we are 2-0 down away from home, so to get a point is a good result. But in the grand scheme of things, we should be coming here and getting all three. If we’d cut out a few individual errors we’d have easily won that game.

“Most weeks it is taking us going a goal down to get us going so we need to eradicate that from our game. We need to go like that from the first minute. Once we get the ball moving, we are quick and we are confident and nobody can live with us.

“Although there are plenty of negatives, the one positive we can take is that we’ve stopped the run we are on. It is a tough place to come and teams will struggle here but we are looking for all three points most weeks.”
