PROVIDENCE, RI (WJAR) – The parents of an 8-year-old boy in Rhode Island are calling him a hero after he sprang into action to help his dad in an emergency.

The man was working on a roof in the backyard of their home near Providence when he took a fall.

The boy ran outside when he heard their dogs barking and found his dad bleeding from the head.

“For like one minute he was unconscious, and I knew he was alive though because he was breathing,” Nova Nascenzi said.

Nova’s dad Ben Nascenzi said his head split open when he hit a window box as he fell from the corner of the roof.

“I got a towel from the kitchen, and I had to wipe all the blood off of him,” Nova said.

Keeping his composure better than some adults would, Nova worked to keep his father awake while scouring the house for a phone to call 911.

He wasn’t able to find his dad’s cell phone, so he ran to a friend’s house to find an adult. But there too, he was met without an answer.

Finally, Nova returned home and found a spare phone in his dad’s truck to call for help.

“They asked me what my name was, when my birthday was, where we live,” Nova said.

It’s training his parents said he had been briefed on before, but not to the extent of his actions that day.

“We do talk about it here and there, but we’re not….you also don’t want to freak your child out, so it’s a fine line. But now I recognize how important those talks were,” Nova’s mother said.

She was at work when her husband fell.

Nascenzi was taken to the hospital where he had nine staples placed in his head. He was also treated for several broken ribs and partially collapsed lung.

A week into his recovery, Nascenzi said he would have never expected his young son to become his hero so soon.

“Proud. It’s so far above being proud of him. I mean he’s a hero,” Nascenzi said.
