A Bronx pedestrian is dead and an ex-con SUV driver is in handcuffs after an early Monday crash on the Major Deegan Expressway, police said.
The victim was struck near the Macombs Dam Bridge about 1:50 a.m. by the driver of a 2008 Toyota RAV4 going south on the expressway, cops said.
Medics took the victim, believed to be in his 40s, to Lincoln Hospital but he couldn’t be saved. The victim was not carrying ID and cops are working to identify him.
The Toyota driver, William Day, 43, of Yonkers, remained on the scene. He’s since been charged with attempted unlicensed driving and attempted refusal to take a breath test, an NYPD spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman couldn’t clarify why he was charged with the “attempted” version of those offenses.
Public records show Day served two state prison terms under the names William Doxen and William Moore, two to four years for attempted robbery in 1998 and 20 months to three years for possession of stolen property and attempted drug possession in 2009.
