Majorca’s stunning coast and buzzing food and drink scene make it an easy choice for many UK holidaymakers, with the idyllic Spanish island attracting 3.7 million Brits in 2023, flocking to hotspots like Palma, Alcudia, and Arenal.

But as with other favoured destinations such as Venice, Santorini, and Barcelona, Majorca is feeling the strain of overtourism. Local residents have made their discontent known, with protests featuring slogans such as “tourists go home” and “foreigners out”.

Thankfully, those seeking equally picturesque views and crystal-clear waters don’t need to travel to Majorca. Lassithi on the Greek island of Crete presents a fantastic alternative.

While Crete remains a top-choice for Brits craving a Mediterranean escape, Lassithi is somewhat of an untapped treasure. The regional capital is Agios Nikolaos; however, Lassithi boasts other welcoming spots for visitors including Elounda, Chrissi, and Myrtos.

A trip to Lassithi wouldn’t be complete without exploring its ancient Minoan ruins. The area is scattered with historical sites, with the Palace of Zakros and the ancient city of Lato standing out as must-visit landmarks for tourists, reports the Mirror.

There’s a wealth of activities to enjoy even if you’re not a history buff. For those who like to keep active during their holidays, the Dikti mountain range is a hit with hikers and the coastline boasts numerous caves – though it’s highly recommended to consult with a local guide before venturing out to ensure your safety.

Additional attractions include boat excursions to nearby islands and trips to one of Lassithi’s many olive oil farms. Beach lovers will be delighted to know that there are numerous beaches to pick from, with the popular Vai Beach featuring golden sands, tranquil blue waters and tropical palms.

Research by eurochange reveals that the average cost of a pint in Lassithi is €3.00, or £2.53, and a meal out averages at €21.00 (£17.69), making it a very budget-friendly choice compared to other European destinations. Prices for three-star accommodation start from £40 a night, although this can vary depending on the season.

With direct return flights to Heraklion, Crete, available from numerous UK airports, reaching Lassithi is relatively simple. From Heraklion Airport, it’s a 50-minute drive to Agios Nikolaos, or slightly over an hour to Elounda.
