ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – UPDATE: Roanoke Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 300 block of Orange Avenue NE on Saturday at around 10:11 p.m.

When officers arrived, they suspected the shooter might be in a nearby hotel room. As they approached, they heard another gunshot. The SWAT Team, along with Negotiations and Drone Teams, were called to help.

Police evacuated everyone from the hotel and tried to contact the person in the room, but were unsuccessful. SWAT then found an adult male deceased from what police say appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.

The investigation is ongoing

Roanoke City Police confirm shots were fired at the Econo Lodge Civic Center, a motel on the 300 Block of Orange Avenue NE.

Police established a perimeter around the motel Saturday night to manage the situation and gather information.

Police say hotel occupants were evacuated to the Berglund Center across the street.

Roads that were closed off are now back open.

As of Sunday morning, no information has been released regarding any injuries or arrests, or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police referred to it in a Facebook post only as a “serious incident” with Orange Avenue closed in the area, and the road has since been reopened.
