The cast of Gavin and Stacey have been spotted filming the last-ever episode on Barry island.

James Corden, 46, and Ruth Jones, 57, confirmed the finale of Gavin and Stacey would be coming for a Christmas special on BBC after weeks of denying we were getting another helping of the comedy in 2024.

Filming has finally kicked off in Barry with just over three months until the episode is scheduled to air.

Ruth was snapped as her bullish hero Nessa, who appears to have added another niche job to her CV as a rickshaw driver, pictured giving an elderly couple a tour of the Welsh town.

The cast were clearly in high spirits with James spotted cracking up behind the camera in one shot and deep in conversation with Ruth in another, appearing to be making notes on the script.

Joanna Page, 47, who stars as Stacey, was also seen carrying her lunch in tin foil, dressed in a denim jacket and floral minidress, keeping warn in an oversized coat.

The entire main cast of Gavin and Stacey is expected to return for one last hoorah, with Mathew Horne returning as Gavin while Larry Lamb, 76, and Alison Steadman, 78, are also confirmed to be back as Gavin’s parents Pam and Mick.

Gavin and Stacey fans were thrilled when Rob Brydon, 59, confirmed the cast were finally back together filming the Christmas special in a picture with Ruth on his Instagram.

The comedian, who stars as Stacey’s hapless uncle Bryn, simply captioned his picture: ‘Something’s occurring…’

Fans drowned the comments with speculation, mostly asking if we’ll finally ever learn what happened on the fishing trip – a long-running mystery teased throughout the show.

Yesterday Corden shared another snap of his character Smithy’s iconic car which is decorated with his slogan: ‘Smithy’s: if your husband won’t do it – I will… Tilin, roofin, plasterin, & feng shui’.#

He added in the caption: ‘Day 1. Here we go.’

The BBC also celebrated the first day of filming, posting on Instagram: ‘Oh. My. Christ. The final episode of Gavin & Stacey started filming today. Truth be told, we’re a little bit excited.’

Gavin and Stacey last aired in 2019 with a Christmas special that broke records for the BBC, becoming the most-viewed scripted TV show in the UK of the 2010s.

More than 17.1million people tuned in for the hour-long special, which left fans with an agonising cliffhanger when Nessa proposed to Smithy in the street.

Five years later, we’re finally going to find out if he said yes…
