The family of a 16-year-old schoolgirl killed in a three-car pile-up have paid tribute to their ‘beautiful’ daughter.

Sarah Cain died two days after the crash that took place on the A1(M) in West Yorkshire last week.

A man has been arrested in relation to the crash, and two others remain in hospital, police said.

Her family paid tribute to their teenage daughter earlier today, in a statement released by police.

They said: ‘We as a family are devastated by the death of our beautiful Sarah. She is and always will be irreplaceable.’

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash at 12.30pm on Thursday, after reports of a pile-up on the southbound carriageway near junction 41.

According to police reports, a Citroen C5 collided with a Kia Niro on lane two of the motorway.

The road traffic collision took place at 12.35pm on August 29 after a Citroen C5 was in collision with a Kia Niro in lane two. Both vehicles then entered lane one where the Kia, which Sarah was travelling in, collided with a Subaru Outback towing a caravan. Two other parties from vehicles involved remain in hospital for treatment to serious injuries The male driver of the Citroen C5, who was arrested on suspicion of driving offences in connection with the incident, meanwhile, has been released on police bail. The two vehicles then entered the first lane, when the Kia, which Sarah was in, collided with a Subaru Outback towing a caravan.

The teenager had significant head injuries and was taken to hospital, but died yesterday.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said three people were taken to Leeds General Infirmary, and a further three were treated at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

The driver of the Citroen C5 was arrested on suspicion of driving offences in connection to the incident, and has now been released on police bail.

In a statement, DS Firth from West Yorkshire Police said: ‘A number of investigations remain ongoing into this very serious collision which has tragically resulted in a young teenage girl now losing her life.

‘Her family continue to be supported by specially trained officers, and we also continue to appeal for information.’

Yorkshire Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.
