Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said the deputy constable was taken to Ben Taub Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

HOUSTON — A Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constable was shot to death Tuesday afternoon in southwest Houston while driving to work, according to officials.

It happened at the intersection of Fondren Road and Richmond Avenue near the Westpark Tollway.

Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz said a man got out of his car and fired multiple gunshots into the deputy constable’s vehicle.

Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said the deputy constable was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Diaz described the suspect as an Asian/Middle-Eastern man between 35 and 40 years old. He was wearing a gray-colored top with dark bottoms. He has dark, thinning hair and is about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and approximately 200 pounds.

His vehicle was a charcoal gray Chevy Impala with a “very unique” bumper disfigurement under the car.

Diaz said the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office are working “all hands on deck” to identify the shooter.

Herman said he had just promoted the deputy constable last week. He had been with the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office since 2021.

He’s the second Texas law enforcement officer shot and killed in the last week.

“There’s too many of these, we’re seeing too many of these,” Herman said. “There’s total chaos in our communities and we’ve got to get it fixed.”

The deputy constable’s identity is not being released at this time. Herman said once his wife, who was out of town, is notified, the name and photo will be posted to social media. Diaz said he was about 50 years old.

“My main goal is to support our fallen deputy and his family,” Herman said.

If you have any information about the shooting, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS(8477) or HPD’s Homicide Divison at 713 308-3600.
