(Gray News) – James Darren, a longtime film and TV actor, singer, and director, has reportedly died.

Darren’s family told Variety that the 88-year-old, known for his role in the 1959 film “Gidget,” died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

The actor portrayed Moondoggie in the surf-themed movie “Gidget.” Darren also sang the theme song for the film and later went on to release numerous albums throughout a successful singing career.

Darren also worked as a director and appeared in TV shows like “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and law enforcement drama “T.J. Hooker.”

A cause of death was not immediately released.
