British champion boxer Callum Simpson has been left devastated after his 19-year-old sister Lily-Rae died after a horror crash in Zante.

The teenager had been holidaying with friends on the Greek party island when she was involved in a fatal smash last month. She was rushed to hospital by air ambulance before spending 10 days in intensive care, but sadly she died from her injuries on August 21.

Simpson, the British, Commonwealth and WBA Continental Champion from Barnsley, took to social media to pay tribute to his sister, The Mirror reports.

In a post he wrote: “Absolutely heartbroken to say that my beautiful little sister, Lily-Rae, was in a road accident while on holiday in Zante. She was flown to Athens and spent 10 days in ICU, but despite the best efforts of the medical teams, Lily sadly passed away.

“Even though she used to ring me to complain about being referred to as ‘Callum Simpson’s sister’, I know she loved the hype. I will continue to make her proud. Love you always.”

Simpson is currently ranked as the No.2 British super middleweight and has won all 15 of his fights, 10 by knockout.

His most recent fight came last month in his home town of Barnsley at the Oakwell football stadium, when he beat Zak Chelli via a unanimous decision.

“It was amazing,” he said after the win. “The main thing for me was to not let the occasion get to me.

“I made a lot of mistakes, but a win is a win. I’m nowhere near the finished article, but we’re well on our way. I want to prove I’m the best in this division. I want to win the British title outright. Once I’ve cleaned up domestically, then we’ll push on.”
