CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – A casual Saturday night turned dangerous for three people involved in a crash on Mink Street and Radford Road in Christiansburg.

Radford Police said it all started around 9 p.m. when a woman allegedly stole a car on West Main Street in Radford near the Speedway store. Police later found the woman at a Sonic restaurant down the road and attempted to pull her over. She sped off from the police, leading them on a high-speed chase going down Radford Road into Christiansburg.

19-year-old Mason Fowlkes was Door-Dashing in Radford that night, making his way back to Christiansburg. While he does not remember much, he says the last thing he does remember is seeing police deploy spike strips. He said after that, everything went black.

“I was in the ambulance. They woke me up in the ambulance and they were asking me a bunch of questions. I had no idea what was going on,” said Fowlkes.

Mason’s car was hit, knocking him off the road, through a business’s parking lot and into a pole.

Mason’s mom, Amber Akers, says it’s a miracle her son is still here and she is thankful he doesn’t remember.

“As a mom, I think it’s better that he doesn’t remember that. I’m sure it was terrifying for him and probably having some type of blockage there probably just helps him get past it and move past it,” said Akers.

54-year-old Selena Mayes and her boyfriend were also out driving when the suspect’s car hit them head-on, according to police. Selena and her boyfriend were flown to Roanoke Memorial that night in critical condition.

Selena sustained injuries including broken ribs and brain bleed, but is expected to recover. Selena’s coworker and friend, Heaven West, says the salon where Selena has worked for 33 years is rallying around her.

“We’re all at the salon working together to, like, pick her up for work and stuff when she is ready, but for right now we don’t see her coming back to work for weeks or months just because of her brain injury. She’s just talking a little bit slower now,” said West.

Radford Police say the woman driving the stolen vehicle was killed in crash.

There are GoFundMe accounts set up for Mason and Selena as they will both out of work for several weeks and have ongoing medical costs.

Both of their prayers and thoughts go to the woman killed in the crash.

Virginia State Police said the incident is still under investigation.
