JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) – A home in Joliet, Illinois, sits empty after a stabbing unfolded inside, ending with a 2-year-old boy killed at the hands of his brother, according to police.

“It is our understanding that family was present inside their home when this incident occurred,” Sgt. Dwayne English with the Joliet Police Department said.

It was reported family member who was present was the boys’ mother.

She called police after finding her 2-year-old son stabbed multiple times.

This unfolded just after 5 p.m. Friday inside the home on Fairway Drive near Caddy Lane in Joliet.

The boy was taken to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department where he later died.

Police said a preliminary investigation shows the boy was stabbed with a kitchen knife by his 6-year-old brother.

Detectives are working with the children’s family who, they said, is cooperating with the investigation.

“The 6-year-old brother is currently with family and officers here at the Joliet Police Department continue to work with the Department of Children and Family Services to figure out the next steps in this investigation,” English said.
