WINDER, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) – Apalachee High School math teacher Cristina Irimie was celebrating her birthday with her students the day she and others were killed in a mass shooting.

Irimie had big plans for her kids on that tragic day.

The night before, she baked her students a cake for her birthday because she wanted to celebrate with them, WANF reported.

Irimie was killed Wednesday after police said 14-year-old Colt Gray opened fire, killing football coach Richard Aspinwall, and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo as well.

Nine others were also injured.

“Her husband wanted the world to know she was a woman with a big heart and a good soul,” said Gabrielle Buth, a relative of Irimie.

Buth said one way to honor Cristina Irimie’s life is to continue to love and invest in children everywhere.

“She died trying to save a student, if nothing else what does that prove, how much she loves them,” said Buth.
