LOS FELIZ, Calif. (Gray News) – A construction worker was safely rescued after being severely trapped in a trench for hours in the heat on Thursday.

The Los Angeles Fire Department found a 24-year-old construction worker trapped in a trench in the backyard of a home. The man was trapped in the trench by loose gravel and soil up to his chest.

Firefighters and paramedics stabilized the site, performed a medical assessment of the man and started the high-risk rescue

The temperature was nearly 104 degrees Fahrenheit and additional responders, nurse practitioners and a physician were called to the scene to help.

Crews worked non-stop in 10-minute rotational cycles for nearly six hours before finally being able to safely rescue the man from the trench.

The man appeared to have a fractured ankle and the pervasive pressure of soil within the trench led to medical concerns that placed him in serious but stable condition when he arrived at the hospital.

Two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion and no other injuries were reported.
