A lorry has overturned in high winds on a busy motorway during rush-hour.

Emergency services scrambled to the M8 in Edinburgh after the alarm was raised shortly after 9am on Tuesday. Traffic Scotland warned drivers that lane two was blocked just after Hermiston Gait Roundabout Westbound following the incident.

Drivers were told to take care on the approach while police and fire crews attend the scene. There are no reported injures as a result.

Traffic Scotland said: “Lane two (Of two) is blocked on the M8 just after the Hermiston Gait Roundabout Westbound due to an overturned lorry. Police and fire services are on the scene.”

The road will shortly be closed while recovery is arranged and diversions will be in place via the A8. It comes after gusts of gale-force winds were forecasted for Edinburgh with a yellow weather warning for wind issued for the North East of Scotland.

According to Met Office, gusts of over 40 miles per hour are expected to hit the capital on Tuesday morning with highs of 52mph from 1pm.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Emergency services are in attendance at Hermiston Gait on the M8 following a crash involving an overturned lorry around 9.10am on Tuesday, September 10 2024.

“The vehicle is not currently obstructing traffic however the road will be closed shortly to facilitate recovery and diversions will be in place via the A8. There are no reports of any serious injuries and enquiries are ongoing.”
