A man has appeared in court after a car crashed into a Scots supermarket. Derek McKimm was detained by police after a car ploughed into a Tesco store.

The 47-year-old appeared in the dock at Greenock Sheriff Court on Monday afternoon over the incident, which took place in the Inverclyde town on Friday evening.

Police were called to the incident at the Tesco Extra in Greenock at around 8.20pm on Friday, September 6. The driver was taken to hospital and later released.

McKimm appearing at Greenock Sheriff Court where he was charged with causing a crash by dangerous driving, in breach of Section 2 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. He was also charged with driving while unfit to do so through drink or drugs.

The other two charges he faces are driving without insurance and failing to provide a blood sample while under suspicion of drug driving. He pled not guilty to all charges and a trial was fixed for next year.

A pre-trial hearing scheduled for later this year and he was released on bail.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 8.20pm on Friday, 6 September, 2024, police received a report of a one-vehicle road crash in Dalrymple Street, when a car crashed into a store.

“There was only one occupant of the car and he was taken to hospital. He has since been released. A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.”
