DALLAS — Quarterback Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a historic $240 million, four-year contract extension, multiple team sources confirm to WFAA’s Joe Trahan.
The deal comes after weeks of uncertainty and mere hours before the Cowboys kick off their season.
The contract also guarantees Prescott will earn $231 million.
And it will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history.
After news of the deal dropped, Prescott himself confirmed the extension to All City DLLS Cowboys beat reporter Clarence Hill Jr., telling him over text, “It’s time to go win.”
In the two weeks before the Cowboys’ season-opening game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, the Cowboys have now signed deals locking up the futures of their cornerstone offensive talents.

And they’ve backed up the bank to get it done, too.
Not only is Prescott now the highest-paid quarterback in the league, but wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is also now the second-highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL, WFAA Cowboys insider Ed Werder noted on X.

In an interview with Werder last week, Troy Aikman — the last Cowboys quarterback to win a Super Bowl — urged the Cowboys to get a deal done with Prescott.
“If you feel that he’s the guy — that he’s the franchise quarterback — I think you get that deal done,” Aikman said. “Obviously, there’s some reservations; there have to be not to get the deal done. [But] the price is only going to go up.”

Aikman added that getting a deal done before the start of the 2024-2025 season would allow the Cowboys to avoid forcing Prescott to play on an expiring contract, as almost never happens to a franchise quarterback.
“When anyone makes a commitment to you, it makes you feel good right?”’ Aikman told WFAA. “He would feel good if a deal got done. But as far as being a leader or whatever impact that has, I don’t think that’s going to change. He’s obviously the leader of this team. I don’t think anybody questions that, whether he has a contract or doesn’t have a contract. I still think he’s a great player. Whether he’s playing in Dallas or somewhere else, he holds all the cards. He’s in control of his future and that’s a good position to be in. Few players ever get that.”
