The death of the 31-year-old inmate marks the ninth person to die while in custody at the jail this year.

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) said a female inmate was discovered unresponsive by deputies in the booking section of the Bexar County Jail early Sunday morning.

Officials say 31-year-old Andrea Nicole Garcia appears to have experienced a medical episode exacerbated by her detoxing conditions, but authorities await an official rule on the cause and manner of the woman’s death.

According to BCSO, Inmates in the holding cell with Garcia alerted the booking deputies saying she didn’t look well. Officials say deputies immediately responded to the cell and began performing life-saving measures.

Ultimately, Garcia succumbed to her medical episode and was pronounced dead by first responders.

Officials say Garcia was booked into the jail on Saturday on a warrant for theft over $1,500 or more previous convictions and for failure to identify.

BCSO said its Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation while the Precinct 2 Constable’s Office handles the death investigation in accordance with the Sandra Bland Act.

Garcia’s death marks the ninth person to die while in custody at the jail this year.
