KIMBALL W.Va. – The town of Kimball will once again play host to live music, vendors, food and a one of a kind motorcycle ride. It’s all set to return Saturday, Sept. 28.

The 7th annual Head of the Dragon Motorcycle Ride and Kimball Fall Festival will run in conjunction starting at 11 am. The motorcycle ride has seen out of state participants in the past and this year it’s going to take bikers in a circle around the county, beginning in Kimball and going through areas like War, Bradshaw and Iaeger.

“We’re hoping this will be our biggest year. We’ve been putting out Facebook ads. They’ve been seen about 250,000 times,” said Devin Short.

“We’ve had people from seven different states come in for the motorcycle ride in the past,” said Heather Mullins.

Both Short and Mullins work for the non-profit Council of the Southern Mountains which is the sponsor of the events. Mullins says preparations for every year’s events begin the moment they end each year.

She says the purpose of the event is to uplift McDowell County in more ways than just economics.

“We want to bring activities to the area that a lot of people probably wouldn’t see if they are here,” said Mullins. “The four wheelers are a big thing but they have their trails. The motorcycle ride gives you the chance, the opportunity to see a whole lot of McDowell County.”

To go along with the motorcycle ride and the fall festival a local historian says he’s also going to be providing history tours of old coal mine sites nestled within the county.

“It’s a chance for people who are not from here to be able to go through the coal area and show them some of the coal camps and what’s still available and see the history of what was once here,” said Jay Chatman.

The fall festival will kick off at 11 am and run all day with the ride set to begin with the festival at 11, it’s expected to take two and a half hours total to complete.

Both events are free to participate in. Organizers for the event say another planned attraction for the fall festival is going to include a motorcycle stunt group called Stunt Army which will perform throughout the day.
