A man is behind bars after sexually assaulting a “lifeless” woman outside a Motherwell pub.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard Thomas Webb carried out the attack in full view of bar staff and passers-by.

Webb, 33, of Arran Road, Motherwell, admitted assaulting the woman while she was intoxicated and unconscious in the town centre on July 21 last year.

He also admitted exposing himself in public.

Carla McGuire, prosecuting, said Webb got chatting to the victim in a pub.

The woman remembered singing during a karaoke session but nothing after that.

The pair were asked to leave the pub after they were seen kissing and “engaging in sexual contact”

Ms McGuire told the court: “The woman was escorted out by a steward. She was unsteady on her feet and CCTV shows her staggering.

“She fell into a nearby doorway and landed on the ground.”

It was then that Webb sexually assaulted her.

This was witnessed by pub staff and others, and someone called the police. One witness filmed the incident on a phone.

The fiscal added: “One steward said the woman appeared to be unconscious.

“CCTV shows her lying in the doorway. She looks lifeless at a point when staff are helping her.

“When police arrived she was lying face down on the pavement and was extremely intoxicated.”

The woman was taken to hospital for assessment before returning to her home in the morning.

Sheriff John Speir deferred sentence on Webb until next month for background reports and a risk assessment.

Webb had been on bail but the sheriff remanded him in custody.
