RICHLANDS, Va. -With the opening of Greenway Park in Richlands last month, the Town has created a new annual event to bring some activity to the park’s new stage.

On Saturday, the Town of Richlands hosted their inaugural Battle of the Bands event, with six bands competing for a $500 prize. In addition to the live music competition, there were also local vendors, a pie throwing contest, and a marshmallow roast at the Richlands Section house.

Jason May, the town manager for Richlands, says despite some rain, the new event is a success and something they hope to make a new tradition for the town. He says this is all part of a continued effort to revitalize their downtown, with the hope of having activities here once a month.

“…It’s a chance to be able to revitalize downtown… We’ve had upwards of about two hundred people come through already today. That’s two hundred people that are walking down our streets, seeing our vendors, being able to see our downtown businesses. We’ve got a number of our restaurants in Richlands that are here out providing food. Again, it’s an opportunity to be able to have economic development that’s organically happening downtown to be able to use our stage,” says May.

May says they have many things planned for the downtown and new park space… including a showing of Beetlejuice using Greenway Park’s new projectors on October 19th. He says you can find out more information about everything planned on the Town’s website and Facebook page.
