Lily Collins has shared her thoughts on dad Phil Collins’ music efforts, revealing that she had no clue some of his biggest hits were actually real songs.
The In The Air Tonight musician, 73, kicked off his career as a drummer for Genesis in 1970 when he was a teenager, and went on to claim the lead singer role a few years later.
He then pivoted to his own solo career in the 90s and took home an Oscar for best original song thanks to his bop, You’ll Be In My Heart, which was on the Tarzan soundtrack.
However, during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Lily explained that she wasn’t initially that familiar with his stint in Genesis, despite having heard the songs when she was much younger.
When asked of her favorite Genesis song, the Emily in Paris actress had to take a second before sharing: ‘The funny thing is that I have these memories, as a kid, of songs that I don’t know if they’re actually real.
‘Because they were in my head as I was maybe in the womb.
‘But then when I went to the first Genesis concert that I actually remembered – as an adult – there were songs that came on that I went, “That’s a real song?!” I thought that was just a melody in my head!
‘It was really weird. It was confirmed.’
Lily was much quicker to offer up her favorite song of her dad’s solo efforts, adding: ‘Probably In the Air Tonight. There’s too many.’
Phil made his name as a drummer for the band, before briefly leaving in 1996 – he reunited with his bandmates for a tour a decade later, and the group got back on the road once again a few years ago, amid a series of health issues.
Lily, daughter of the rocker and Jill Tavelman, previously spoke of her relationship with her father and beginning her career under his shadow.
‘I’m so incredibly proud of what my surname represents, for what my dad’s done,’ the Netflix icon told Glamour in 2022.
‘I’m an incredibly proud daughter, but I am going on my own path, my own journey. I didn’t want to change my last name.’
‘I so badly wanted to always fight that, because it wasn’t the place that I was coming from,’ she added of being referred to as ‘Phil Collins’ daughter’.
‘So I am really proud of where I am today because I know how hard I work.’
