Star of absolutely huge 90s kids TV show teases return after 25 years

After it was announced Balamory was making an unexpected comeback toCBeebies, another classic kids’ TV show could be getting the reboot treatment.

Tweenies star Bob Golding, who voiced characters Milo and Max, has said he talks about the beloved show’s return ‘every day’ and suggested a petition to bring it back to our screens 25 years later.

Airing from 1999 until 2002, the live-action puppet show focused on four pre-school characters, Bella, Milo, Jake and Fizz, learning in a fictional playgroup supervised by two adults and their dog.

Now, Bob has called for BBC bosses to revisit Tweenies but said it would work best as an animation show as a live-action version would be a ‘huge, logistical’ process.

‘I think we should petition the country to get them back. Get all the 20-something-year-olds together and say, look, we’re having kids now,’ he told The Sun.

He said while he regularly chats to the cast about reprising their roles, they had not yet spoken to TV bigwigs, who own Tweenies format.

Bob explained: ‘I mean, obviously amongst us, we’re all saying they should do, because I believe the rights are sitting in someone’s drawer at DreamWorks now.’

While Tweenies ended after just three years, there were a total of 390 episodes, which continued to air as repeats on CBeebies for more than a decade between 2002 and 2016.

A live stage version of the programme also toured around the British Isles in 2009 to mark its 10th anniversary and also travelled as far as Hong Kong that same year.

Between 2003 and 2005 there was a Tweenies section at theme park Alton Tours, while in 2001 the Tweenies scored the Christmas number one with single I Believe in Christmas.

It comes after the BBC announced Balamory had been recommissioned for two new seasons, which will air from 2026.

The wacky BBC show was a hit with preschool kids two decades ago when it made its debut in 2002 before it came to an end in 2005.

Set in the fictional island town of Balamory, a pastel-hued escape, the Scottish series focused on a nursery school and its teacher Miss Hoolie, as well as the community.

The original series helped to make stars of its cast, including Julie Wilson Nimmo, who played Miss Hoolie, comedian Miles Jupp, who played Archie, and Andrew Agnew who played PC Plum.

Speaking about upcoming reboot, Julie told Daily Record: ‘I seriously think this is bigger than the Oasis reunion.

She added: ‘craziest and best news ever that Balamory is coming back’.
