A man accused in an apparent second assassination attempt of ex-President Donald Trump left a note assuming the outcome and instructing others to ‘finish the job’.
Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, allegedly delivered a letter in a box to an unidentified person’s home centered on the presumption that his effort to kill the Republican candidate would be unsuccessful.
‘This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster,’ read the note, according to prosecutors.
‘It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.’
The letter was detailed in detention memo filed ahead of a Monday hearing with the Department of Justice set to argue that Routh should stay behind bars as his case proceeds.
Routh also wrote in the note that started with ‘Dear World’: ‘Everyone across the globe from the youngest to the oldest know that Trump is unfit to be anything, much less a U.S. president.
‘U.S. presidents must at bare minimum embody the moral fabric that is America, and be kind, caring and selfless and always stand for humanity. Trump fails to understand any of (that).’
Routh was arrested on September 15 on a road about 50 miles away from Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course shortly after a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle poking out of a fence at the ex-president’s property while he was golfing.
Secret Service agents fired at Routh, who fled. No was was injured in the incident.
The box left with the person, who contacted authorities, had other letters, ammunition and a metal pipe, among other items.
It also had a list with dates of Trump’s scheduled appearances in August, September and October, prosecutors said.
Investigators also found a book that Routh wrote last year titled, Ukraine’s Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen-Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea, WWIII and the End of Humanity.
Justice Department documents stated: ‘In the book, ROUTH stated that he “must take part of the blame for the (person) that we elected for our next president that ended up being brainless, but I am man enough to say that I misjudged and made a terrible mistake and Iran, I apologize.
‘You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment and the dismantling of the deal.’
Routh has been federally charged with possessing a gun with a number scratched out and illegally possessing a gun as a felon. He may be hit with more serious charges.
He is expected to appear for a detention hearing on Monday.
