Vernon Kay was offered a helping hand from his Radio 2 colleague Zoe Ball this morning after he came on air with a concerning croaky voice.

As Zoe was wrapping up her Radio 2 Breakfast Show today (September 23rd), she greeted her co-star as he was about to kick off his programme, but couldn’t help notice that he sounded a bit off.

Vernon then shared that he had woken up with a “hideous” throat issue but was determined to push through his morning radio stint, to which she remarked that he sounded “terrible” and humorously suggested “gargling salts”.

He responded: “Aw, I know, I apologise. I’m a bit groggy this morning. I’ve woken up with a hideous throat. It’s gonna be more music, less chat.”

Ensuring her that everything was under control however, he continued: “No, we’ll be alright. We’ll be alright. It’s just gonna be a little bit awkward for two and a half hours.”

Zoe added: “It’s the thing… that voice, though, because this (is) what happened to Jo [Whiley] when she was covering Glastonbury this year. It’s the thing when your voice is normal then it cracks and it goes, and it sounds like you’re a teenager.”

In a voice hampered by coughs, Vernon managed to say: “Exactly, but we’ll… excuse me, we’ll be alright”. Zoe then wished him good luck and jokingly asked if he wanted her to “hover just in case”.

During the show, Vernon shared that a listener named Kirsty sent him well wishes and urged him to invite listeners to send in voice notes to “fill the whole show”.

She also wished him “healing vibes” and “big hugs”, prompting Vernon to express his gratitude and provide a contact number for listeners to send their messages.

It seems luck hasn’t been on the presenter’s side lately. Besides falling ill, the ex Family Fortunes star vented on Instagram last week about train delays affecting his schedule.

He informed his followers about being late for his show due to “train delays” and “signalling issues”. Eventually, after boarding a stationary train, he posted a selfie and shared his frustration, as Scott Mills did overtime for him in the studio.
