The 167th Sanquhar & District Horticultural & Industrial Society Show has been hailed a huge success.

Held in Sanquhar Community Centre, there was a very high standard of exhibits in most sections on a day of sunshine.

The wet summer had not put a dampener on the skills of the keen gardeners who showcased their hard work.

The official opening of the show was performed by Mrs Marjorie Burnett, who was delighted to be presented with a thank you gift, on behalf of the society, by Eliza Pagan.

The show president thanked Marjorie for opening the show and her very kind words about the people of Sanquhar.

This year’s judges were: horticultural, Mr A Bertram from Dumfries; floral and children sections, Mrs A Williamson, Sanquhar; sewing and knitting, Mrs A Henderson from Terregles; baking, Mrs S Nixon from Moniaive; walking sticks, Mr Willie Waugh, Sanquhar.

The committee were very pleased with the number of entries for this year’s show which also saw baking of a very high standard – and the entries were well up on previous years.

The staff and P1 pupils at Sanquhar Primary School had made a huge effort to produce painted sun flower pictures and also coloured-in carrot posters which decorated the hall.

The committee also very much appreciate the donations and sponsorship given to the show by Sanquhar businesses and

friends, and for the prizes gifted to the raffle. As well as an appreciation to all exhibitors – especially those who travelled from outwith the area.

Special thanks and appreciation also go from the committee to all non-committee members that assisted behind the scenes in the kitchen with the teas, judging, stage building and the clean up at the end which all helped to make the show a great success.
