The spine-chilling saga of the Menendez brothers, whose high-profile crime was immortalised in Netflix’s hit drama series, is now set to unravel further from the perspective of the imprisoned siblings in a gripping new documentary.
Shocked viewers have been riveted by Ryan Murphy’s nine-part limited series dubbed Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story, but are about to get an even closer look as some of those intimately involved share their accounts.
Netflix has unveiled the trailer for The Menendez Brothers, a documentary crafted in collaboration with Erik and Lyle themselves. It purports to offer the brothers’ own narrative, something they’ve reportedly been unable to do throughout the 30 years since their conviction for the killing of their parents, reports the Mirror.
Incorporating original crime scene footage, trial excerpts, and interviews with pivotal figures in the trial, the documentary features recorded phone calls with the brothers from the confines of Donovan Correctional Facility where they remain incarcerated.
The gripping trailer begins with one brother saying, “Everyone asks why we killed our parents. Maybe now, people can understand the truth,”.
Enthusiastic responses from fans are flooding in. One eagerly awaits deeper insight, commenting on the trailer: “The Menendez brothers finally get to tell their story. The reminder is already set on Netflix. Can’t wait to watch.”
Meanwhile, another expresses amazement at the inclusion of direct interviews, stating: “They got the real brothers in interview? Wild. I’m definitely watching these series!”.
One of the brothers, Lyle, has condemned the Netflix series portraying their parent’s murder and subsequent events. His statement, shared on a Facebook page run by his family, critiqued the dramatisation.
“I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show,” the statement read. “I can only believe they were done so on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I say I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naïve and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent.”
In further backlash against the portrayal, Tammi Menendez, married to Erik Menendez, denounced the drama via X, which used to be known as Twitter: “I’m sorry to know I was right. The Netflix show was [an] insane perversion of the truth and a complete and tragic misrepresentation of Erik and Lyle.”
The Menendez Brothers is available to stream on Netflix from Monday, October 7.
