Outstanding community contributions made by people, voluntary groups and local organisations in Monklands have been hailed at this year’s North Lanarkshire Provost’s Awards.

The special ceremony, hosted at Dalziel Park, recognised the “remarkable work” of the winners, who have made a “significant impact”.

The nominations were made by local councillors and community board members to recognise those unsung heroes whose dedication and hard work go above and beyond to support others.

Special Achievement Awards went to Julie McPherson (Airdrie), Katie Slavin (Coatbridge), Heather Bryson (Northern Corridor) and NL Federation of Tenants & Residents.

Julie McPherson has been a devoted volunteer at St. Andrew’s Hospice for 38 years.

Since the hospice opened in 1986, Julie has filled various roles, from greeting patients and families to supporting bereavement services.

She has also cared for flowers on inpatient wards, made items to sell for fundraising, and helped set up the hospice’s charity bookshop in Airdrie town centre.

Julie’s “longstanding dedication and compassion have made a significant impact on the hospice community”.

Katie Slavin founded Shining Stars nine years ago to create a supportive community for individuals with additional support needs.

The group offers a space for members to socialise, build friendships and participate in activities without judgement.

Under Katie’s leadership, Shining Stars has achieved remarkable success, including performances at Westminster and meetings with prominent figures.

Katie and her team “have made a significant difference in the lives of their members, embodying the spirit of inclusivity and community”.

Despite her young age, Heather Bryson has made a significant impact by dedicating her time to supporting people with disabilities, both locally and globally.

During the COVID lockdown, Heather focused on recycling and creating Little Lockdown Angels to raise funds for dementia.

She has also facilitated intergenerational connections through Zoom exercise classes, promoting movement and hydration for people with disabilities.

Heather is an active volunteer and a qualified RLSS UK Rookie Lifeguard, constantly seeking new ways to spread positivity and encourage inclusivity and recycling.

Her “proactive and compassionate approach has made her a role model in her community”.

And the NL Federation of Tenants & Residents has shown exceptional commitment to representing and advocating for the interests of North Lanarkshire residents.

With over 200 years of collective service, the Federation’s executive committee members dedicate countless hours each week to a wide range of activities, from committee meetings to tenant scrutiny panels.

Their efforts have led to significant improvements in housing standards, tenant engagement and community development.

The Federation continues to be “a strong voice for local groups, ensuring that residents’ concerns are heard”.

Provost Kenneth Duffy told Lanarkshire Live: “Our towns and villages have so many exceptional groups and individuals that dedicate their time and efforts to helping others.

“We received over 150 nominations with each representing a potential winner.

“After much deliberation, 37 deserving winners were selected across our nine community board areas.

“I was amazed by the responses and humbled as I found out a bit more about the incredible efforts of those nominated.

“Their selflessness and commitment are truly inspiring, and we are so grateful for your contributions to our towns and villages.

“I hope all the exceptional winners enjoyed the occasion we are already looking forward to planning next year’s event.”

Provost Duffy thanked FAUN Zoeller (UK) Limited for sponsoring the event, host Edward Reid, the Coatbridge entertainer, and all the local councillors and community board members who helped with the nominations for this year.
