A Scots holidaymaker who was left stranded abroad after being struck down by a serious injury has been flown back to hospital in Scotland.
Amy Sharp was in Corfu for a friend’s wedding when she suffered the severe spinal injury. She has now been transported back to Edinburgh.
The IT manager is now closer to friends and family thanks to being back in the capital, after her bosses intervened when they heard of her desperate situation.
The 45-year-old had flown to the Greek island to enjoy a friend’s wedding but was admitted to hospital with two collapsed vertebrae a day before she was due to fly home.
Edinburgh Live previously reported how her family rallied together to fundraise for an air ambulance, costing £43,000, to bring her back to Edinburgh.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live on Tuesday, her brother Graham Sharp, 51, revealed Amy was finally at the Royal Infirmary – all thanks to bosses at the firm she works for.
The fundraiser reached a whopping £10,000 before Amy’s employer Accenture stepped in to help. He said: “As a family, we were working together to get an air ambulance, we were going to get her home.
“It’s all we could do because everywhere we turned to, the door was just shut in our face. On Saturday, after I spoke to Edinburgh Live, Amy’s story was shared everywhere.
“The managing director of Accenture personally got in touch with me and offered to charter an air ambulance. They organised an air ambulance and everything. It was on the ground back in Edinburgh by Monday 4pm.
“She is now at the Royal Infirmary and she is doing a hell of a lot better than how she was when I last spoke to you. She is getting the right pain medication and is able to use the facilities and get back to normal.
“In Corfu, the painkillers they were giving her weren’t even touching the sides. She’s now just five minutes up the road too which makes it all very easier.”
Graham added: “The generosity is just staggering. What a gesture! I can’t thank them enough. This level of generosity is just unheard of.”
Amy’s family have now closed the fundraiser and added: “I’d like to thank everyone for their donations that have been made. The love and support has been overwhelming and I thank you for taking the time to review and add money at such trying times.
“Amy’s company Accenture PLC have stepped in to cover all hospital and air ambulance costs. Their generosity to support has come as a silver lining at the end of a very challenging week. Thank you Accenture.”
