A couple who bought a new home were left horrified when they started to rip up the carpet.

The pair, eager to renovate their new abode, began cleaning up the mess left by the previous owners. However, a series of disgusting discoveries left them shocked, with one sharing their experience on Reddit.

Their post on r/HousingUK read: “We completed yesterday! Yay! The house is so filthy there was even dog hair in the fridge, oh.” They further detailed their challenging start in the new property on the Reddit forum, where user WritingLow221 expressed their disgust at the smell of the dog hair.

They posted: “I think after our vendors had a sale agreed they stopped cleaning up after their three dogs. When hoovering the main bedroom I had to empty the vacuum four times before I’d done the length of the room once. Also found they’ve nail gunned (why?!) The window frame in what was meant to be our toddler’s room.

“I know this is part and parcel of buying and there are always some surprises, but f***ing dog hair on all the window frames and windows up to ceiling height is nuts. I’m just shouting into the void with this one. F***ing hell I need to tear up these dog stink carpets though.”

Members of the public empathised with the original poster’s plight and shared their own distressing experiences of purchasing property. One recounted: “Sellers of our old house did the same. Clearly stopped cleaning completely after offer was accepted. Like not even wiping up spills in the kitchen… for months! The house stank of bins and dog poo and sewage. I cried when we got the keys.”

WARNING: OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE BELOW…

A second individual shared: “When I moved into my current house it was filthy. Dog hair everywhere, all the door frames were so hairy. The walls were filthy. It was gross. Worst thing was that the house had been empty a couple of months and there was a poo in the toilet.”

However, the original poster later stated they harbour no ill feelings towards the previous occupants, saying: “Yeah I’m not mad at them. She put together a pack of really useful information – from how to look after the fish in the pond to window cleaner recommendations.

“She also went and got loads of leaflets from local attractions (we relocated) with emphasis on family things because she knows we have a young child. The dog hair though. I couldn’t see where the wall met the floor from hair at the edges of the room. Couldn’t let my daughter sit down.”
