There’s finally a solution to prevent your lettuce from wilting within days of purchase.

As the UK transitions into the autumn season, marked by wind and rain, it doesn’t necessarily mean we have to say goodbye to lettuce just because we’re not enjoying salads any more. This leafy green is a versatile addition to various sandwiches, tacos, and burgers.

However, it can be quite frustrating when your lettuce turns mouldy before you’ve had the chance to use it all. We’re all familiar with the disappointment of finding an opened packet of lettuce in the fridge that has turned brown and slimy within just a few days.

Lettuce is arguably one of the quickest vegetables to spoil once we bring it home from the supermarket. For those living alone or not keen on eating leaves for three consecutive days, it can seem impossible to consume it all before it goes off. Fortunately, there is a way to extend the lifespan of our lettuce – by storing it correctly.

In a slideshow video shared on TikTok by a user named Zol, she revealed a simple trick that everyone can start implementing today to make their lettuce last longer. It involves using a common kitchen item for storage.

Zol suggested if you have a whole lettuce, like a little gem or an iceberg, the best way to store it is to remove it from its plastic bag and wrap it in kitchen foil before placing it in the fridge.

Sharing her step-by-step guide complete with pictures, she explained: “Wash your lettuce, dry the lettuce using paper towels or a cloth, and remove the outer layer. Wrap the lettuce in foil and store it in the fridge. This will help your lettuce stay fresh for longer.”

This method is particularly effective for whole lettuce rather than pre-prepared lettuce sold in bags. For bagged lettuce, storing it in an airtight container with kitchen roll at the bottom to soak up any excess moisture works best.

Viewers of the video were astounded, with many keen to give the hack a whirl themselves.

A user exclaimed: “Thank you, will definitely try it!” Another was impressed, commenting: “Wow, I will try this! Thank you.”
