Andy Murray has been hitting the greens again – joining sporting heroes from the football and cricket world as he makes the most of his tennis retirement.
The Dunblane legend hung up his racquet after the Olympic Games in Paris and took part in the Celebrity Pro-Am tournament at Wentworth when he teamed up with fellow Scot Bob MacIntyre last week.
And now Murray has teamed up with former Wales, Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale and England cricketing legend Kevin Pietersen. The trio, joined businessman Warren Kweiwere to make a four-ball, playing at the ultra-exclusive Queenwood Golf Club – in the top 100 courses south of the border – on the outskirts of London.
Pietersen is one of England’s greatest-ever batsmen and he shared snaps from the day on his Instagram page. And he posted: “59 WATCH today! Some SERIOUS golf played by all at Queenwood. I’ve never played in a fourball that’s shot a combine 59! Helluva game but it was a combination of tennis and cricket that WALLOPED football and swimming!”
Murray told last week how he was a bag of nerves during his Celebrity Pro-Am appearance at the BMW PGA. He eamed up with fellow Scot and Ryder Cup star MacIntyre, Jimmy Anderson and Anton Du Beke – the former Strictly Come Dancing partner of his mum Judy. And after a nervy start, the three-time Grand Slam champion and seven-handicapper found his game on the West Course.
He said: “I couldn’t really feel my arms and legs. It was good. A brilliant experience for me. To be out there with one of the best in the world for me, it was brilliant. I was pretty nervous. I couldn’t really feel my arms and legs. I didn’t really hit any balls on the range beforehand. Yeah, I was feeling it. But it got better. It got better as the round went on. It’s a different sort of nerves from Wimbledon because you are comfortable in the tennis environment.”
