WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – A bill that boosts U.S. Secret Service protections for major party presidential candidates was passed unanimously by the Senate on Tuesday and is now on the way to the president’s desk.
The Enhanced Presidential Security Act requires an equal standard of protection for presidents, vice presidents and major presidential and vice presidential candidates.
The bill was also passed unanimously in the House last week.
It was introduced after two assassination attempts were made on former President Donald Trump in recent months, prompting outrage and heightened scrutiny of the Secret Service.
Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) brought the bill to the floor in the Senate on Tuesday night.
“Something’s clearly changed this year. The Republican presidential candidate has had two assassination attempts. We know that Iran wants to kill the president,” said Sen. Scott. “We know that that President Trump is at risk. And so there’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. They should get the exact same protection that the president’s getting.”
The bill will apply to all future major party presidential candidates if it is signed into law.
