BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Two inmates at the Federal Correctional Institution McDowell have pled guilty to possession of a weapon by an inmate at a federal prison, the Department of Justice announced.

The Department of Justice said on Oct. 19, 2023, an FCI McDowell staff member conducted a random search of 24-year-old Savion Garcia’s prison cell. During the search, the staff member found two handcrafted weapons known as “shanks” on Garcia, the Department of Justice said. One was made from a metal bar, and the other of wood, the Department of Justice said.

Garcia admitted to possessing the shanks, and also admitted that they were intended to use them as weapons, the Department of Justice said.

Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced on January 13, 2025, and faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.

The second man, 26-year-old Demoreal Killebrew, was found to be in possession of a “shank” in his left shoe during a search, the Department of Justice said. The Department of Justice said the shank was made of metal, and Killebrew admitted to having the weapon and planning to use it as a weapon.

Killebrew is scheduled to be sentenced on January 13, 2025, and faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
