When most people think of visiting Japan, iconic destinations like Tokyo and Kyoto often spring to mind.
However, beyond these famous cities, Japan is home to countless hidden gems – and one airline is offering the chance to visit them for free.
Japan Airlines has announced it’s offering some international passengers free domestic flights to any destination in Japan.
The new promotion is aimed to provide a ‘seamless travel experience’ across the country and encourage travel to lesser-known destinations.
And there’s plenty to see. The airline’s domestic network includes 133 routes and serves 64 airports.
From the breathtaking landscapes of Hokkaido to the sand dunes of Tottori – visitors will be able to explore Japan’s natural beauty without the additional transport costs.
Currently, only travellers from the US, Canada, Mexico, Thailand and Singapore can take advantage of the deal, with it extending to include Australia and New Zealand from September 18, Vietnam and the Philippines on September 25 and Indonesia, China, Taiwan and India on September 27.
Live outside of these countries? Don’t panic. Japan Airlines says it plans to extend the list of eligible countries later in September, which could be good news for the thousands of UK tourists that visit Japan every year.
But how can you actually bag a free flight? To be eligible for the deal, travellers must have return international flights booked with the operator, and a corresponding domestic flight in the same reservation.
For travellers coming from the US, Canada, Mexico and China, a stopover fee of $100 (74) will apply if they plan to stay in their first destination for more than 24 hours.
The offer also includes a generous baggage allowance of 23kg across two bags, so passengers won’t have to worry about pesky additional charges.
The airline recommends visiting numerous domestic destinations, such as Okinawa’s tropical islands and the historic city of Fukuoka.

The promotion follows Japan Airlines being named one of the best in the world by Skytrax’s World Airline Awards earlier this year.
