An alleged murder victim born in Glasgow moved to Tyneside just four weeks before his death.

John Smyth was found injured in a property in Wallsend on Sunday morning, September 22, but later died after being taken to hospital in the north east of England.

The 63-year-old, originally from Scotland, had moved to North Tyneside from Derby a month ago. George Ness, from North Shields, has now appeared in court charged with his murder, reports Chronicle Live.

Emergency services rushed to Holly Avenue at around 5am on Sunday morning, where they found John seriously injured at a flat on the street, near to Wallsend Metro Station.

It comes as Northumbria Police continued to investigate the death with forensic officers seen at the property for a third day. A police cordon remained in place at the front and back of the property.

Ness was in the dock at North Tyneside Magistrates Court on Tuesday accused of murdering Smyth, as well as threatening another man with a bladed article and possession of a bladed article, namely a kitchen knife.

The 41-year-old, of Avon Avenue, was remanded in custody to appear again at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday. The three charges were not put to him and no pleas were taken.
