Staff working at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital have overwhelmingly voted to accept the NHS Scotland pay offer.

Unite the union said its members at the hospital had agreed to the proposed 5.5 per cent uplift in wages.

The union had earlier recommended the offer as the “best negotiable” in the current financial circumstances.

The pay package – backdated to April – will mean that the minimum uplift for the lowest paid workers on a grade 1 salary is £1,278, and a new hourly rate of £12.71.

Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary, said: “Unite’s thousands of members working in NHS Scotland have overwhelmingly backed a good pay offer which has been successfully negotiated by their union.

“Unite will always stand up for better jobs, pay and conditions in the health service because NHS Scotland workers should be rewarded for their outstanding work and professionalism.”

Unite members across the NHS includes workers in estates, porters, the ambulance service, medical equipment management, scientists and theatre roles.

James O’Connell, Unite lead negotiator for the health sector said: “Unite has secured an inflation beating pay increase for our NHS Scotland membership.

“We believe the offer was the best negotiable under the present public financial circumstances, and it will provide a significant boost to take-home pay.”

The offer, is still being considered by members of the Unison and Royal College of Nursing
unions.

Unison recommended its members also accept the offer while the RCN said it would leave it to its membership to decide.

The result of the Unison ballot close tomorrow, with the result to be announced on Monday, September 23.

The RCN, which also represents midwives working at the RAH, will also close its ballot at 12 noon tomorrow.

Doctors are not included in the proposal as their pay is negotiated separately.
