Paisley Opera are excited to welcome Buddies down to the devil’s lair to experience Gounod’s musical drama – telling the story of a man who sells his soul to the devil.

Faust: The Devil Went Down to Paisley is a grand opera that dives into the tension between temptation and redemption, with lush, dramatic music that brings out the emotional highs of desire, conflict, and fate.

Faust is a man who feels like he has wasted his life because he’s never known true love. Luckily for him, the devil, called Mephistopheles, shows up at just the right time to grant him the gifts of love and eternal youth, all for the small price of spending the afterlife in the fiery pits of hell.

With the devil’s help, Faust manages to seduce the beautiful Margarita, but not everything goes to plan.

A spokesperson for Paisley Opera said: “Our unique spin on the Faust story is set in Paisley in a technology-reliant future, and has tragedy and comedy in equal measures thanks to the Paisley/English translation which is full of local dialect.

“And we are to be joined by an international cast of soloists including Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy as Faust, Catriona Clark as Margarita and Nicholas Morris as Mephistopheles, as well as the esteemed Orchestra of Scottish Opera and vibrant local dance group right2dance.”

The opera will be performed over two nights at Methodist Central Hall on Sunday, October 6 and Wednesday, October 9 at 7.15pm. Paisley Opera aspires to be a company that the people of Paisley can truly take pride in.

Its vision revolves around creating and staging operas in unconventional and unexpected locations, often right amidst the lively streets of the town.

This time last year, the group sold out the newly refurbished Paisley Town Hall with a production of The Scottish Play – Verdi’s Macbeth, being the first event to take place in the venue.

By bringing opera closer to the community, Paisley Opera aims to foster a sense of ownership and engagement.

It believes that opera has the power to touch hearts, evoke emotions, and transcend boundaries. It is a professional company with a community chorus at the heart of what they do.
