Scott Brown is no longer in contention to land the vacant manager’s job at St Johnstone – according to a report.

The Ayr United boss has held talks with the Perth club, who are in the market for a new manager after parting company with Craig Levein last week. Brown, 39, previously endured a tricky spell in charge of Fleetwood Town down south, but has enjoyed a superb start to the campaign with Ayr at Somerset Park, leading them to the top of the Championship with four wins and three draws from seven matches.

But the Daily Mail now claim that the former Celtic skipper has dropped out of the race to succeed Levein following talks with Saints owner US owner Adam Webb and will remain in Ayrshire. St Johnstone are keen on Aberdeen’s first team coach Peter Leven, who impressed in his spell as interim boss of the Dons last season before returning to the backroom staff following the arrival of Jimmy Thelin.

Larne boss Tiernan Lynch – who has led the Northern Irish club into the group stage of the revamped Europa Conference League is also on the club’s radar. An unnamed foreign manager is also said to be in the running to land the job, with St Johnstone willing to cast the net in search of a manager who can bring an attacking brand of football to McDiarmid Park.
