Rangers will hope to get off to a positive start in the revamped Europa League when they face Malmo away from home on Thursday.

The Gers will take on the Swedish champions in one of eight fixtures in the competition’s new league-phase as they bid to reach the knockout rounds. Of the 36 teams, the sides that finish in the top-eight positions will progress to the last 16 stage automatically, with the teams ranked between ninth and 25th then entering the play-off round. The bottom eight sides are eliminated immediately.

Philippe Clement‘s men suffered disappointment last month when they fell to a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Dynamo Kiev in qualifying for the Champions League, but go into Thursday’s opener with confidence after scoring back to back victories against Dundee in the last four of the Premier Sports Cup and Dundee United in the Premiership.

However, Rangers do have some painful memories against the Swedish side, having failed to beat Malmo in all four of their previous encounters, most recently in 2021 when they lost 4-2 over two legs under Steven Gerrard in a Champions League qualifier. Record Sport has all the key details ahead of a big night of action in Sweden’s third-largest city.
