Have you noticed your once-shiny cutlery becoming dull just weeks after purchase?

Don’t fret, as a lifestyle guru unveiled a simple trick to help your knives and forks quickly regain their original sparkle. According to TikTok user Jess (@modern_motherhood), four common household items and boiling water are all you need for the job.

Speaking to her 266,000 followers, Jess instructed them to line their sink with tin foil “shiny side up” and pour in boiling water keeping the plug in. She suggested using a baking tray if foil isn’t available and said: “Then add your cutlery, some bicarbonate of soda and sea salt.”

She then added white vinegar to finalise the cleaning mixture. “Now leave that for a couple of hours,” she explained. “The tin foil will cause a chemical reaction that transfers all the dirt from your cutlery onto the tin foil.”

Highlighting the effectiveness of her method, she presented a before-and-after comparison featuring a sparkling tablespoon next to one that hadn’t undergone the process. “You can see the difference,” claimed Jess. “It really does bring them up nice and new.”

Having returned the gleaming cutlery to its drawer, Jess also noted her tip works wonders for steak knives too – particularly ones with wooden handles, adding: “You’ll be surprised at the amount of dirt and grime that comes out of them.”

Jess concluded her presentation by highlighting her method also tackles cutlery rust – a common consequence of repeated dishwasher use. Her followers swiftly flocked to compliment her ingenious tactic.

“Wow, gonna try that,” exclaimed one TikTok user. Another chimed in: “It’s a good hack… been doing this for years,” while several users chimed in with their unique variations on the trick.

One suggested: “If you have a dishwasher, scrunch up some foil, not too tight though. Throw it in top shelf, turn on and everything comes out gleaming.”

Another user extended Jess’ technique to jewellery care. “You can line a bowl with tin foil, pop your silver jewellery in with some baking soda and boiling water and it does the same thing to it,” they detailed.

A a third suggested a different solution: “Can fill a pot with vinegar and boiling water and leave them in for 5/10 minutes then whip them out and buff them with a towel they’ll be shinning.”
