TAYLOR COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) – A Florida sheriff offered dire advice to residents who chose not to or were unable to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Helene’s arrival.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office urged those who stayed behind to write their name, birthday and other important information on an arm or leg in permanent marker.

The advice from law enforcement was so any potential storm victims could “be identified and family notified” by search and rescue crews.

At least one Hurricane Helene-related death was reported in Florida after a sign fell and hit a car driving on Interstate 4.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the National Guard, highway patrol troopers and other state officials were on standby for any potential search and rescue efforts.

Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm just after 11 p.m. Thursday along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
