Poor gut health could be causing more problems than just those in the bathroom with a doctor warning men’s sexual performance could be at risk. A healthy gut is important for various reasons, including immune support, weight management, the absorption of nutrients and assisting with digestion.

But poor gut health could impact our wellbeing in various ways – including heightening men’s risk of erectile dysfunction. Dr Donald Grant, GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, has highlighted the key ways poor gut health can impact men’s ED risks, including affecting libido and blood flow.

Dr Grant said: “Prioritising a healthy gut is essential for our wellbeing and can prevent the contraction of illness and disease – with 80% of the body’s immune system located here.

“It plays a massive role in regulating hormones and can impact weight management. When it comes to erectile dysfunction, there are many potential causes – and poor gut health can be a massive contributor.”

Dr Grant said poor gut health impacts inflammation which is a contributory factor towards erectile dysfunction. Inflammation can impact blood vessels, reducing blood flow and making it more difficult for men to achieve and maintain an erection.

A healthy gut is important for testosterone to maintain libido, sperm production and other general bodily functions such as hair growth. The gut plays a big role in the production of hormones meaning poor gut health could lead to lowered sexual interest and difficulty managing an erection.

A common gut health condition irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), can indirectly have a strong impact on men’s ability to perform in the bedroom. The condition comes with chronic pain, reducing men’s sexual desire, and IBS can trigger the release of cortisol – a stress-causing hormone – further impacting libido and maintaining erections.

A healthy gut absorbs more nutrients like zinc and magnesium which can aid blood flow and cardiovascular health to promote better sexual function.

Dr Grant said: “To avoid these risks, looking after our guts should be a priority.”

Here are his top tips:

  • Increase exercise: “This can reduce the likelihood of constipation and indigestion while promoting an active lifestyle, reducing stress and improving gut health in several ways.”
  • Manage food intake: “Fresh fruit and vegetables are effective at maintaining a healthy gut – foods such as lettuce, melons and tomatoes are rich in fibre, helping aid digestion, avoid constipation and maintain a balanced gut microbiome.”
  • Hydration: “This is essential for the maintenance of a healthy gut. Keep an eye on urine as a dark yellow or browny colour can indicate signs of dehydration. Be sure to constantly rehydrate throughout the day as this helps avoid constipation.”
